Host Jimmy Fallon’s rendition of La La Land proved to be the best opening in years, but the 2017 Golden Globes ceremony as a whole was full of surprises. La La Land made Golden Globes history twice by winning all seven categories it was nominated in, plus Damien Chazelle is the youngest person to win Best Director. Aaron Taylor Johnson and Isabelle Huppert winning for Best Supporting Actor and Best Actress respectively were a big shock, since award prognosticators had predicted favorites Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) and Natalie Portman (Jackie) to win.
As for TV, The Night Manager made another surprising sweep of wins taking the majority of the limited series acting categories. Donald Glover received two much deserved wins for Atlanta, while Tracey Ellis Ross inspired us with her win for Best Actress in a Comedy Series being the first African American in 34 years to be nominated for that category. The Golden Globes might be regarded as more respected due to these audacious selections.
