“The only band that matters” is finally having (part) of its story told on the big screen. Over the past few years, we’ve seen pretty great films about known bands, such as The Doors, The Beach Boys, The Runaways and even Joy Division. Well, now it’s time for The Clash. Just a few days ago, IFC released the trailer for London Town, upcoming film starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the mighty Joe Strummer, frontman of the influential English punk rock band.
The film, directed by Derrick Borte, is set in 1979 and tells the story of a 14-year old boy whose life changes when he is introduced to Strummer and the rest of the band. “This coming of age story is just a glimpse into a brief moment in the life of one young boy almost 40 years ago, set against the rise of punk and a backdrop of social political, and racial unrest that is incredibly similar and relevant to what we see happening in the world today,” mentioned Borte in a recent statement.
The two-minute trailer includes a lot of musical scenes (and songs from the band!) where we can see Rhys Meyers showing off as the rebel musician Joe Strummer was. Should we see it or should we not? Being a huge fan of the band, I’m willing to give this one a go.
London Town, scheduled to open in theaters and VOD on October 7, will also include music from Buzzcocks, the Stranglers, Toots and the Maytals, Willie Williams and Stiff Little Fingers. Watch the trailer below and let us know what you think in the comments!
