We are entering the sweet spot of summer when Hollywood begins to tease its fall movies, typically the awards contenders that will likely fill our year-end top 10 lists. Based on Garrard Conley’s memoir, Boy Erased sure looks like it may be one of them. Following the story of Jared (Lucas Hedges), a 19-year-old outed to his parents, one of them Baptist pastor (Russell Crowe), he is sent to gay conversion therapy camp.
Boy Erased is Joel Edgerton’s second feature-length directorial effort, and he’s taking on a delicate and affecting story, which hopefully is treated with the care and nuance it deserves. Edgerton also stars in the film as the head of the gay conversion camp, along with a cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Cherry Jones, Xavier Dolan, Joe Alwyn, and Troye Sivan, who performs the song ‘Revelation” with Jónsi featured in the trailer.
Boy Erased opens in select theaters on November 2, 2018.
