Creed was one of the most pleasant surprises of 2015. A seemingly innocuous reboot of the Rocky franchise playing on the classic “son of the legend” trope ended up being an emotionally stirring and viscerally satisfying experience on the same level as the original Rocky. After the film’s undeniable success landed writer/director Ryan Coogler a little gig called Black Panther, the reigns of the franchise off to his good pal, Steven Caple Jr. Our first look at Creed 2 indicates that Caple is re-capturing Coogler’s grounded and character driven tone, while still upping the physical stakes in the same manner that the original Rocky sequels did. As an adamant Rocky 4 apologist, it gives me great joy to see that we’re getting a grudge match between Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) and Ivan Drago’s son Viktor (Florian Munteanu). We’ll have to wait and see if Sylvester Stallone’s script is as strong as Coogler’s but for now, enjoy this first look above. Read more about Creed 2 in its official press release below:

Life has become a balancing act for Adonis Creed. Between personal obligations and training for his next big fight, he is up against the challenge of his life. Facing an opponent with ties to his family’s past only intensifies his impending battle in the ring. Rocky Balboa is there by his side through it all and, together, Rocky and Adonis will confront their shared legacy, question what’s worth fighting for, and discover that nothing’s more important than family. Creed II is about going back to basics to rediscover what made you a champion in the first place, and remembering that, no matter where you go, you can’t escape your history.
