On this week’s episode of Grown-ish, we see Zoey unravel for the first time in Black-ish/Grown-ish history. For the most part, we’ve known Zoey as the most put-together gal who doesn’t let the small things phase her. Until now. And of course it has to do with boys, because let’s be honest, some of us still get flustered around someone they’re attracted to.
I’m not sure when or how (it’s college and anything goes) but Zoey and Aaron (Trevor Jackson) hit it off during a party, and they continued to be pretty flirty towards one another with her girls screaming in excitement on the side. Yas, girl. Cue to the next scene where Zoey is in her dorm, and receives the controversial “U UP?” text from Aaron. She’s received these texts before, but this one felt different, which left Zoey confused. Ultimately, she calls her girls into her dorm to figure out whether or not she’s up and how to respond.
Everyone consoles Zoey with split responses. Does it make you a slut? Is it sweet? Jazz and Sky (Chloe and Halle Bailey) said it best: “Girl, there ain’t nothing romantic about a ‘U UP?’ text.” TRUE. When is it ever? The final verdict? She doesn’t respond to him and leaves him waiting, assuming she is the master of power moves. She thinks she’s got the power…until the next night in class, where Aaron seems to have moved on fast to another girl.
As Zoey comes to grips with the fact that maybe the power move wasn’t a great move, she then proceeds to send her own “U Up?” text to Aaron that night. And immediately regrets it. So she apologizes, saying that it was meant for someone else. That’s where it should have stopped. But it doesn’t. She goes on about a 5-10 minute cringe-worthy texting rage, talking about everything from their future kids’ names to family reunions. I honestly couldn’t even handle watching this because I know I related to this scene more than I should. It just happens! We word vomit and can’t stop! That is, until Aaron finally responds with his own “Please stop.” Hear you loud and clear, Aaron.
But we bounce back. In fact, we bounce to the Jaden Smith lookalike = Luca (Luka Sabbat). Pause, right? When in the world did Zoey slightly mention she was attracted to him until now? Kind of caught off guard, but whatevs, it’s college. “I’m so up!” Zoey exclaims when Luca sends his own “U Up?” text. They end up at an abandoned warehouse party featuring a special appearance by Kid Ink, and make out in the corner underneath some really nice lighting (Good lighting for Luca at least!). Obviously an amazing time, right? Well, not good enough for Zoey. As soon as she’s back in her dorm for the night, Aaron comes running back. He hits her with another “U Up?” text, and it’s like she forgot all about her night with Luca.
Now Zoey is juggling both Aaron and Luca, unbeknownst to the two of them. She changes their notification sounds on her phone, maps out who is where, and avoids all Snapchat appearances possible. (Poor Luca.) She had a handle on this, no? Nah. Technology beats Zoey at her own game. While FaceTiming Aaron, Luca hits her up at the same time. After telling Aaron she has to take a shower, she hangs up on him to chat with Luca. Then the latter starts having bad service, so he decides to Skype her instead. This is where Zoey makes her mistake.
For some reason, she hops back on FT with Aaron within seconds of Luca hanging up. Confused as to how she still looks the same after a shower, Aaron sees Luca call Zoey on her computer via Skype. This is when the two find out about one another.
The two verbally fight for a quick minute and Aaron hits Luca with one of the best clapbacks: “You look like Willow Smith.” (Actually it’s Jaden, but it’s OK.) Naturally, the two guys weren’t about the two-timing and dropped Zoey. It’s cool. It’s Zoey, she’s over it…after she talked it through with the Dean. Something that wouldn’t happen in real life, but it’s a TV show, so we’ll let it go. (I mean, I never once saw my own dean IRL)

And thus we have Zoey single again. For about a good minute until a cute boy tapped her for the directions to the library. College, amirite?
