A mere two months before its release, All The Money in the World is having a major cast shakeup.
According to Deadline, director Ridley Scott and producers Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas of Imperative Entertainment have decided to remove Kevin Spacey from the entirety of the historical drama. Spacey, who played oil tycoon Jean Paul Getty in the movie, will be replaced by fellow Oscar-winner Christopher Plummer (Beginners, The Sound of Music) and have all of his scenes reshot. Said reshoots are set to commence immediately with Scott looking to still make the movie’s original release date of December 22 this year. The decision comes after multiple people have come forward accusing Spacey of sexual misconduct.
According to the report, the decision to reshoot the scenes came as a collective agreement between Sony Pictures, the crew and the cast, which includes Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams. The studio recently pulled the movie from the closing night slot of the AFI Festival running November 9 through November 16, showing concern as to how the award season contender would affair with the allegations against Spacey. The report added that Scott was particularly upset over the film’s release being derailed by Spacey, allegedly because Scott had put multiple projects on hold for to focus on the movie. The report adds that Spacey’s scenes were shot between eight to ten days.
The movie itself recounts the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III, John Paul’s grandson. When John Paul I refuses to pay his grandson’s ransom, his daughter-in-law and young John Paul’s mother (Williams) relies on a Getty advisor (Wahlberg) to investigate and retrieve the boy. The movie is based on the book by John Pearson and also stars Timothy Hutton and Charlie Plummer.
This the second major project Spacey’s been dropped from after Netflix fired him from the Emmy-winning show House of Cards earlier this month. Spacey was first accused of sexual misconduct by actor Anthony Rapp, who claimed Spacey had made sexual advances on him when he was 14.
