We got the chance to take a further look at Netflix’s adaptation of Death Note.
- The panel, moderated by a surprise Terry Crews, kicked off with Death Note, which was noticeable from the countdown timer that was shaped as an apple which eventually rotted to its core when it hit zero. The film’s trailer was then shown and soon followed by the cast and crew taking the stage.
- Producer Roy Lee hired director Adam Wingard because of his abilities to take well-known genres and spin their tropes into something new, as seen in You’re Next and The Guest.
- The panel was briefly crashed by an on-screen Skype call from Ryuk, voiced by Willem Dafoe, to show an exclusive scene of when Light Turner (Wolff) first summons the aforementioned evil spirit.
- Adam Wingard chose the project because unlike his previous features, it wasn’t a property pinned down by one genre. He embraced the opportunity to tackle multiple genres at a time, and mentioned that besides the elements of drama and horror, there’s one scene that reaches the tip of being a brief musical.
- One fan asked the panel who or what scares them the most. Wingard was quick to say the President of the United States, which got considerable applause from the crowd.
- Another attendee asked Keith Stanfield how he got into his role of L, a detective trying to hunt down and capture Kira: “It’s weird. We’re all weird in the best way. And I like that.” Stanfield has normally sported an endearingly eccentric persona on and off-screen, but he was also staying true to his moody character’s love of M&Ms, which he was snacking on throughout.
- The panel ended a bit abruptly, but Crews announced a giveaway of vouchers to the audience to try and attend an advanced showing of the movie later at night.
