The beautiful Bryce Dallas Howard graced us with her presence in Miami a couple of weeks ago to talk about her new movie Pete’s Dragon. She tells us about her imaginary friends, which mythological creature she’d like to see a movie about, working with the legendary Robert Redford and more! Check it out below.
In the movie, everyone thinks that Elliot, the dragon, is Pete’s imaginary friend. We asked Bryce if she remembers any of hers.
“Totally. I wold go into the woods every morning and I would have these epic fantasies that happened every single day in my mind with my imaginary friend.”
It seems like dragons are bringing back their popularity with Game of Thrones and now this movie. You have to wonder, what’s going to be the next flick featuring a mythological creature.
“I’ve been in this territory of like mythological creatures, or extinct creatures. And it’s this zone of fantasy meeting reality. I’m a really big fan of unicorns. The Last Unicorn was one of my favorite movies as a child. I was always in the backyard running from the big, red bull.”
As Dallas puts it, working with Robert Redford hasn’t made it easy to speak about how amazing it is to work with the iconic actor. Not only as an actor, but as a filmmaker and entertainment entrepreneur, he’s like this epic human being.
“But then you’re met with the reality that he’s just a really lovely, cool guy who you like working with and has these wonderful stories. And then you go into this part of your mind where you’re like ‘It’s Robert Redford!'”

Elliot and his home, the woods, are in peril in the movie, so you can’t help but think if the message of the environment and animals in captivity were some things that Dallas responded to when choosing this project.
“We didn’t ever want it to be a political thing, just something that we can all get on board with, which is that there are resources that are available to us but we want to always be in balance with how we navigate that so that we’re leaving things for our children.”
Dallas has had her fair share of acting with fantastical creatures and playing one herself (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Lady in The Water). She tells us that she doesn’t know which is harder or easier.
“For any character, whether it’s human or mythological, you’re needing to make decisions about who they are, what their point of view is, what their objective is. The human experience is different for all of us. You just need to make decisions that will provide context.”
