And we’re here! After weeks of predictions and wishful thinking (including our own) the 2016 Emmy nominations have been announced and they’re…okay. The big thing worth noting (and most definitely celebrating) is the late inclusion of The Americans, a show many critics have been hailing as the best drama on television since the very start. Stars Matthew Rhys and Kerri Russell both were nominated for their efforts along with the series itself. If Rami Malek weren’t up against Rhys, I might be crossing my fingers for the show to sweep.
Elsewhere there were the usual suspects such as Modern Family still getting a nomination despite the fact that it’s so past it’s prime it’s aggravating now to see it block out shows such as You’re the Worst, Fresh off the Boat , Casual and more. I don’t really understand how Downton Abbey and House of Cards continue to slip in considering they too aren’t close to their peak while I couldn’t have even told you that Homeland aired last year. On top of that, all of these shows being nominated means that Orange is the New Black also was left off the roster.
Emmy season, like any awards season, comes with the invisible disclaimer that if you’re a fan of television, you’re likely going to be disappointed in some capacity but nothing irked me greater than seeing both Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston up for best actor in a limited series while Oscar Isaac was left off the list of names read. Both are fine actors but neither delivered their best work (not even close for Cumberbatch) and that’s what Isaac did in Show Me a Hero.
On the brightside, there was some deserved love for Game of Thrones as Kit Harrington and Maisie Williams scored first time nods (less excited about eyebrow acting Emilia Clarke), Andre Braugher and T.J. Miller found some love for great seasons on their respective shows and even UnReal earned some recognition for Constance Zimmer’s undeniably strong work.
Overall, there were a lot of strange wins, a lot of aggravating “snubs” (don’t love the word) and that’s pretty much what we’ve all come to expect.
