On the surface I thought Me Before You was going to be a typical fairy tale romance. Boy meets girl. They fall in love. They live happily ever after. The end. But oh, am I most certainly mistaken.
If you’ve read the book, you clearly know it doesn’t pan out that way. Instead, it was a tale of opposites. A story of two people who were meant for each other but came from different worlds.
Me Before You showed how unlikely circumstances can bring about the deepest of loves. The book explored the unique relationship between Will and Louisa. Once a bachelor living a glamorous lifestyle, Will lived life to the fullest. Until one day, he got into a horrible motorcycle accident that changed his life forever. Meanwhile Louisa, a small town girl, hasn’t ventured outside her hometown. Little do they know they would change each others’ lives forever.
Due to the polarity of their personalities, it isn’t smooth sailing when the two meet. Will and Louisa’s relationship has many ups and downs—to say the least. It takes awhile for Will to warm up to Louisa and for Louisa to anticipate Will’s needs. All the while, Will’s guard is up, but that doesn’t deter Louisa one bit. Her bubbly personality breaks through those walls and Will became himself again. This was a testament to Louisa’s resilience. Her perseverance was touching and inspiring throughout. Though she might be quirky, she has more will and determination than anyone. And might I add, her sense of humor is contagious.
Me Before You was so much more than what I initially expected. It was about friendship, family and rediscovering an appreciation for life. It brought about so many emotions. As I progressed through the story, I cried, laughed and loved. I didn’t expect to experience such a strong impact from just one book. The fact that it wasn’t the traditional love story is probably why I loved it the most.
It was surprisingly dark at times, had its share of uplighting moments and pulled at my heartstrings. From those dark times, it brought about this idea of choices. Moyes beautifully displays through Will’s character, that in life, we don’t always make choices that others will agree with. The choices that we make in life may leave others angry or even hurt, but given time, they’ll understand. You have to make the choice that is best suited for you. We cannot control the people who walk into our lives or the choices we make, but we can vow to stand by them and love them wholeheartedly. Overall, I highly recommend everyone to read Me Before You and to probably have a tissue box close by. This quirky, romantic tale hits theaters on June 3rd.
