Weekend B.O.: ‘American Sniper’ Continues Blockbuster Run

Box office estimates are in for the weekend of January 23-25th 2015.

#1 – American Sniper:

This movie is an absolute beast! It followed up its blockbuster opening with a blockbuster second weekend as well, bringing in $64.3M for an early total of $200.1M. This amazing follow-up, along with stellar weekday numbers, solidifies this movie’s prospects as one of the highest grossers of the year. Looks like no matter what crazy remarks are being made about this pic, it’s getting the last laugh.

#2 – The Boy Next Door:

Looking at how badly the other movies debuted this weekend, I can’t really say anything bad about this one’s $15M opening. Being honest, with Jennifer Lopez not exactly at the highpoint in her career and no other stars to buoy the pic, this is actually a solid start. It opened higher than JLo’s last first-billed effort, The Back-Up Plan, and from what I’ve heard still has quite a bit of an audience left in moms and teenage girls.

#3 – Paddington:

With stellar reviews and virtually no competition from Strange Magic much lower down on this list, it’s no surprise that the CGI bear pic had a light fall for a $12.4M second weekend. Its current total of $40M still has two weeks to grow before SpongeBob 2 steals all the kiddie audience.

#4 – The Wedding Ringer:

The Kevin Hart-Josh Gad comedy had a less impressive second weekend, but still managed to draw $11.6M worth of tickets for a $39.6M 10-day total. Though it doesn’t have the strongest reviews from critics or audience members, the lack of major comedy competition within the next few months should allow this pic to have a decent run.

#5 – Taken 3:

Continuing to fall from the charts, the final Taken installment brought in $7.6M this weekend for a $76M total. Getting anywhere near the final numbers of the previous films is completely out of the question now, but it still could potentially reach that $100M mark.
