There comes a time when you are at a music festival and you listen to a song, and then the next thing you know you’re obsessed with it. In my case, it was a DJ who played a remix of the song (shoutout to Kaytranada), I looked up the original, and I knew I found an exciting new artist I had never heard of and fell in love with his music. That’s the story of how I found out about MNEK.
MNEK (em-en-ee-kay) has a voice like no one else I have heard lately. It’s like the ’80s and ’90s R&B and dance/pop sounds had a baby. I don’t know how to explain it, really. His voice isn’t like the rest of R&B crooners out there; if anything it’s deeper and has a whole lot of soul. His songwriting skills are exceptional, and production wise, he’s a genius. After all, MNEK started out as a songwriter/producer for artists like Naughty Boy, Clean Bandit, Gorgon City, Olly Murs, Rudimental, Little Mix, Tinie Tempah and Bastille, just to name a few. Can you believe he’s only 20 years old?! What a talented young folk!
This was the song that started it all for me. I was late to the party, but “Wrote A Song About You” should have been a summer anthem this year, and since I’m writing this post I’ll make it the winter anthem, if there is such a thing.
There’s a reason why “Wrote A Song About You” and “Every Little Word” have been stuck in my head for weeks: MNEK’s songwriting. If you don’t believe me, watch the videos on his VEVO channel and we’ll talk in a couple of minutes when one of the songs is stuck in your head. It shouldn’t be a surprise that he signed with EMI back in 2004.
In a world where we are saturated with new artists that fail to truly shine, MNEK creates an impression from his carefully crafted lyrics, his outstanding production, and a voice and style we have yet to see and listen to on this side of the world. In the meantime, I’ll be patiently waiting for his debut album. Whenever he blows up, which I’m certain will happen, remember we told you about him here at TheYoungFolks.

I leave you with Kaytranada’s mix for “Wrote A Song About You,” aka my go-to song whenever I go out. This is the song I listened to at iii Points Festival in Miami. MNEK, if you’re reading this, come and perform here, man!
