I don’t believe in genies, or jinnis, as it’s spelled in The Fire Wish. However, if given the opportunity to make any wish right now, I would wish for everyone to read this novel. The Fire Wish, published on July 22nd, is a fiery addition to the fantasy novels in the young adult world. The unique, captivating plot is accentuated by the author’s writing style. The Fire Wish isn’t just a book with a gorgeous cover – Amber Lough more than holds her own in her debut novel.
The Fire Wish introduces readers to protagonists Najwa and Zayele. Najwa is a jinni, although she’s not your typical wish-granting girl. She’s also a spy preparing for a war to be waged against humans. As for Zayele, she’s a human about to be married off to a prince of Baghdad. That’s not to say she actually wants to be married though. Reluctant and determined to stay single, Zayele somehow captures Najwa and makes a wish. Thus begins a Parent Trap-esque situation. Najwa and Zayele switch places and must somehow keep up a charade, in addition to attempting to save the world. Hey, no one ever said that wishes made life easier!
I absolutely adore this plot. Dragons, sirens, mermaids, and witches are just so last year. Jinnis, however, are new. In addition, the whole switching places aspect just makes the plot of The Fire Wish even more special. I was on my toes (while in a chair), frantically flipping the pages as I tried to find out what happened next to these two girls. Not only is the plot fresh, but it’s also fast-paced AND organized. Although there were many minor details to be addressed, Amber Lough did it all. I had no trouble following all the twists and turns of this brilliant novel.
Character development is definitely something I also have to mention. Although Najwa and Zayele both had flaws, I loved the fact that they improved as people as the novel progressed. They’re real, and they’re funny, interesting, kick-butt heroines too! What more can you ask for? Oh yeah, for Najwa and Zayele to have different personalities. Don’t worry about that though! The author has got you covered. Although there are quite a few characters in the book, each character has distinguishing characteristics. They don’t seem like the same character with different names.
That being said, the romance aspect of The Fire Wish wasn’t as developed as I had expected. While I do love the boys of The Fire Wish, I also wish that I got to know them a little more. Of course, there was a lot going on in the novel, so certain aspects consequently feel a little rushed.
Overall, The Fire Wish is a wonderful addition to the book world that any young adult or adult should read! (I’m looking at you!)
