Well, it looks like the race to Oscar has begun. I must admit that I was still not in the awards season mood, but taking a look at the newly announced nominees for the 2013 Independent Spirit Awards has finally got me going.
Unsurprisingly, 12 Years A Slave leads the indie film pack with the most nominations. Alexander Payne’s Nebraska received an impressive amount of nods as well, giving it a good leg up in the awards race. There are some films that managed a few surprises, Shailene Woodley earned a nomination for her work in The Spectacular Now, Frances Ha got itself a couple of key nods, including Best Feature. The Best Male Lead race is tight with exceptional performances all around. Finally, I’m glad to see that Julie Delpy and Before Midnight earned some well-deserved recognition.
I think this really helps narrow an awards race that I was beginning to think was a bit all over the place. Hey, it still might remain messy with many new films yet to be released officially into the season. Either way, now’s the time to catch up with some good independent films. There’s no doubt that 2013 had an amazing amount of indie releases to choose from.
