Book Review: Proxy by Alex London

Proxy Alex London review

If you’re looking for a high stakes thriller that’s pretty different from the usual YA fare, then Proxy is definitely a book to check out.

Proxy follows both Syd and Knox. Syd is a Proxy, a person assigned to take any and all punishments his assigned Patron’s actions deserve. Unfortunately for Syd, a rich, spoiled troublemaker, Knox, is his Patron. Knox has caused Syd to get so many punishments for his reckless behavior. But that’s how the system works. Syd’s an orphan, meaning he was born in debt, and since Knox’s father picked up the tab to Syd’s schooling, he’s stuck as Knox’s Proxy until he turns 18 and his debt is paid off. Yet, the day comes when Knox has done something unredeemable, putting a death sentence on Syd. Will Knox do the right thing? His decision is only the beginning to a fast-paced ride.

Proxy is good thriller with a great and unique concept. This world of Proxies and Patrons is not only refreshing but intriguing. In many ways, it parallels with today’s society. While its plausibility is alarming, it also makes this book a captivating read. Along with its pacing (mostly fast, but at times uneven) and surprises and twists, Proxy manages to entertain and provoke thought.

However, what I really appreciated was the diversity of story’s characters. Diversity in YA is something I’m beginning to pay more attention to as I read more YA lit. I appreciated that the author gave us a gay lead character with Syd and didn’t rely on stereotypes or any of the sort when characterizing Syd. The same goes to the other characters of different races. Besides having diversity change things up, it makes the story just seem much more authentic.

The dynamic between Knox and Syd is the best thing about Proxy. Uncomfortable and unsure whether they should trust each other, seeing a friendship form between the two was the most rewarding thing about the book. The friendship wasn’t forced for the plot’s sake; it did grow fast, but naturally into something meaningful.

Proxy is just the beginning to what can turn out to be an enthralling and highly entertaining series. It has action, mystery, great characters and an unique world. Author Alex London did a great job introducing us to this world and giving us a heart-stopping ending to this first installment. I can’t wait to see where London takes readers next.
