Oscar Buzz: The Critics Choose This Year’s Best in Film!

Awards season is now in full swing as this past week, film critics groups across the country announced their favorite films, actors, directors, etc. of the year. One thing to keep in mind is that critics and Oscar voters don’t always think alike. (Don’t remind me of the 2010 Oscars.) However, critics awards do a great job of narrowing down the contenders.

As we see below, Zero Dark Thirty, a movie that most of us hasn’t seen yet, is going to be major contender. (Almost making Oscar watchers think Argo-what?) Unsurprisingly, many agree that Daniel Day-Lewis gave the best male performance of the year in Lincoln, while the National Board of Review gave Bradley Cooper that honor, ushering him into the Best Actor race for his work in Silver Linings Playbook. LA movie critics deservedly awarded Joaquin Phoenix for his lead actor performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master. The Best Actress category, which for weeks people predicted was going to Jennifer Lawrence, has almost unanimously gone to Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty. Even ZDT’s director, Kathryn Bigelow, is getting a ton of love for her new movie.

I’m happy to see “the least obvious contenders” getting some recognition too. Allyson wrote a piece last week about how the two leads in Beasts of the Southern Wild deserve to be nominated. Several of the critics circles below agree, giving various awards to Quvenzhané Wallis and Dwight Henry, as well as the film itself. The Perks of Being A Wallflower is also deservedly getting some wins. It made the National Board of Review’s Top 10 Films list, and the Boston Society of Film Critics showed it much love by awarding Ezra Miller with a Supporting Actor win. (Emma Watson was runner-up in their Supporting Actress category.)

The Supporting Actor and Actresses races are more of a toss-up. Performances by Sally Field (Lincoln) and Matthew McConaughey (Magic Mike) to Leonardo DiCaprio (Django Unchained) and Amy Adams (The Master) have been awarded. Anne Hathaway was a pre-awards favorite for Les Miserables, but has only one award so far, thanks to the NY Online Film Critics. Cinematography, Animated Film, along with a few other categories, have awarded different films as well. It’ll be interesting to see in the next few days who the Golden Globes, SAG and Critics Choice (BFCA) choose as nominees.

See all the winners from the New York Film Critics Circle, National Board of Review, Boston Online Film Critics, Boston Society of Film Critics, New York Film Critics Online, and Los Angeles Film Critics Association after the jump!
