With the success of the Snow White movies, the upcoming releases of Jack the Giant Slayer and Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, and the few that are in development like Maleficent and the couple Beauty and the Beasts films, Hollywood is really into reviving fairy tales. It’s no surprise that Disney is moving ahead with Mark Romanek’s live-action Cinderella movie with a script written by Chris Weitz (About A Boy, New Moon). Earlier this week, it was reported that Cate Blanchett was in negotiations to play the evil stepmother, and now we know of three contenders who want to try on the glass slipper.
According to Variety, Saoirse Ronan, Alicia Vikander, and Gabriella Wilde will be testing for the title role of Cinderella. Of the three, Ronan has the most star-power. Audiences will recognize her from her work in Atonement, Hanna and 2013’s The Host. Ronan is a fine actress, and I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s the front-runner for Cinderella. Also, it would be great to see her go up against her Hanna co-star, Blanchett again. However, she is in-demand right now, and that may mean she doesn’t have time in her schedule to do this film. She just signed on to star in Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel.
As for Vikander and Wilde… Alicia Vikander recently starred in Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina. She was great in it, and her character was a bit Cinderella-ish. I can definitely see her playing the princess and holding her own opposite Blanchett. British actress Gabriella Wilde starred in The Three Musketeers last year and will appear in the Carrie remake. I have yet to see Three Musketeers and obviously not Carrie, so I don’t have an opinion on Wilde’s suitability for the role. Although if it is offered to her, there’s no doubt she’ll take it.
I must say that despite how tiring this fairy tale trend is starting to be, I’m pretty excited for Cinderella. I’m mainly curious to see what Romanek does with it. I love his films, especially Never Let Me Go, and can see him doing something very beautiful with this overdone fairy tale. I also love Cate Blanchett and can’t wait to see her tackle another villainous role.
