One of the most special things about music is the ability to share our personal truths through medium that everyone understands. NYC native Jennifer Denali chronicles her own experiences through depression and self medicating through songs wrought with triumph and self-confidence. With soulful vocals and stylish flair, the pop singer-songwriter Jennifer Denali aspires to bring others along on her own everlasting journey towards acceptance. The Young Folks spoke with Denali on her latest single “Try” and how she learned to love herself. Check out the full interview below.
The Young Folks: Your new single “Try” is about the journey to self-acceptance, what’s the most important lesson you’ve learned about self-love?
Jennifer Denali: Yes, it is about self-acceptance and all that inner work. The most important lesson I’ve learned from self-love is that it’s a lifetime journey and commitment. It’s a practice.
TYF: The music video also recently came out. What was your experience on set?
JD: My experience on set was super emotional yet productive. I’m involved in every aspect of my videos, so it luckily went as expected.
TYF: How did you find your sound?
JD: This is going to be short but it found me. We stripped everything back to just guitar and vocal and built it from there.
TYF: What is your favorite thing about performing?

JD: Looking at the audience and seeing their reactions. I also love talking to them after and having a real energy exchange.
TYF: Do you have any covers that you enjoy performing?
JD: We do a “Holiday” by Madonna medley in one of my songs and it’s really fun. I usually dedicate it to any moms in the audience who never stop feeling sexy.
TYF: Do you remember the moment you knew you wanted to be an artist?

JD: I knew when I was 4 or 5 years old. And it started with singing. I told my dad when we were driving that I wanted to be in the car (on the radio)! It was the best way I knew how to say that at 4 years old.
TYF: What is your favorite lyric you’ve ever written?
JD: “Falling falling leaves, down down on me, when I learn to love again, I’ll fall in love in love with me.”
TYF: What is the most important thing you think people should know about your music?

JD: That it makes you feel. And it’s real. It’s coming from an honest and vulnerable place. It’s coming from real life experiences.
TYF: What is coming up next for you?
JD: I am releasing a new single and video “Falling Leaves” in October! It’s perfect timing for the fall so I can’t wait to hear what everyone thinks. I also have a show coming up in November in LA so stay on the lookout for that one!
