Awards Season, my favorite time of the year, and it is always this same period of time that reminds us of which films should have made it to receive an Oscar nod, and those that we didn’t even see coming. As per usual, whenever the nominations are announced there are several films that you can point out throughout the year that will make it, on the other hand, you have those that you would have never guessed would even get a shot.
The winter holidays will be a very busy time for Academy voters, squeezing in time for screening of the films, ever since the nominations are going to be revealed five days prior on January 10th 2013. However, while “The Hobbit“, “Django Unchained“, “Zero Dark Thirty“, and others are going to take place during the break, what is surprising in a way is that most films generating buzz are released way before the holiday.
Starting off with “Argo“, which just topped the Box Office three weeks after it’s release, proving further the power of word-of-mouth, this film will certainly earn Ben Affleck a nomination for Best Director. Depending on upcoming releases, it might as well have possible nominations for Best Editing and Best Picture.
In addition, the lackluster Box Office release for “Cloud Atlas” might have an impact, but with a movie as ambitious as this one, will probably gather nominations for Best Makeup & Hairstyling and possibly a long shot nomination for Jim Broadbent. Talking about make-up, “Lincoln” is definitely getting rave reviews from Daniel Day-Lewis’ performance, also Steven Spielberg’s direction.
On the other hand, films like “Silver Linings Playbook“, which premiered at Toronto Film festival, have had critics and audience alike raving about it, from speculations of Best Director nod for David O. Russell, to Best Adapted Screenplay, to the performances by Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, this one is a must-see.
Of course, “The Master” has to be included in this list, from the moment I saw the trailer and how every frame was so perfectly put, it shouldn’t be a surprise to see Paul Thomas Anderson get a nomination for Best Director, and the performances by Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams get nominated as well.
Moving on, if there are pleasant surprises within the nominees, it would most certainly be films like “Beasts of Southern Wild“, “Moonrise Kingdom” and even by a long shot “The Perks of Being a Wallflower“,”The Dark Knight Rises“, however, the race will be very tight and with all of the quality films being released in the upcoming weeks, it all comes down to how many films the Academy will select for Best Picture.
