Remember this moment?
Eight years later, the wish of YouTuber “greg blessing” (and likely the whole world) came true. Kind of, anyway. On Monday, director Allan Ungar gifted Uncharted players with a 15-minute “live-action fan film” about Naughty Dog and PlayStation’s roguish treasure hunter starring — holy cow, holy cow, holy cow — Nathan Fillion. The Canadian actor, pretty much pop-culturedom’s other Canadian royalty after captaining the (prematurely grounded) Serenity spaceship in Firefly, has been fans’ definitive choice for the role when at the helm of the game adaptation for Sony was David O. Russell…
Then Neil Burger. Then Seth Gordon.
Back to the short: Set after Golden Abyss’ Quivira, Drake’s Fortune’s El Dorado and Among Thieves’ Shambhala have been found, Nathan Drake (Fillion) is now on the trail of Afonso de Albuquerque’s riches, which is currently — and predictably — tucked in the yet-found and sunken hull of the Flor do Mar. Sully (Stephen freakin’ Lang) and Elena (Mircea Monroe) also make an appearance. Watch it here:
Notice that delicious film/game blurring moment? That’s a brilliant nod to the highly cinematic games. What’s even more impressive, though, is Fillion nailing Drake’s smug grin and way-too nonchalant attitude in the face of danger. FYI, this is not a fanboy speaking; the short has been receiving acclaim high and low — including Fillion himself and Neil Druckmann, the director of A Thief’s End (now $20 as part of PlayStation Hits program).

Regarding the feature-length version, after constant gos and nos behind the scenes, Sony has found a director in Stranger Things and Night at the Museum’s Shawn Levy and a Nathan Drake in Spider-Man Homecoming’s Tom Holland. Wait, the youthfulness is because the story is a prequel, so hold your pitchforks and petitions.
