St. Patrick’s Day was full of surprises for Fresh Off the Boat’s Huang family. Evan learned a valuable lesson, Jessica got better material for her book, and Louis had to fire someone.
Let’s start with Evan. Turns out, he’s been secretly playing parent and making sure that Eddie’s been on track. Thanks to his help, Eddie made it into the honors society. That being said, it was weird that he was upset his older brother was doing well. Wasn’t that the point of Evan helping? He even went as far as almost making Eddie miss the honors society meeting. It goes to show that as mature as Evan can be, he is still a kid at heart. Eddie even proved him wrong, showing he has is own unique way of getting things done. In all the worrying about his older brother, Evan left his homework at home. Good thing Eddie was able to bring it to him, and he showed his younger brother he no longer needs his guidance. He’s been using Evan’s example to better himself. What a heartwarming ending.
In order for her book to be more authentic, Jessica did a ride-along with Officer Bryson. What she learned was that not much goes on in the day to day of a cop. Not only that, but sometimes cops do things to serve the community like take dog poop. Then they got a call about a dead body. An old man had passed midway through a TV show. What made it interesting was the nurse describing how simple the passing was. There was nothing flashy about it, just an old man who died laughing while watching TV. Surprisingly, Jessica couldn’t handle the scene and ended up throwing up and passing out. It was funny because in her book, the deaths are always gruesome, but now that she’s actually experienced seeing one, it was a little too much. She did power through and improve her book. Maybe more ride-alongs are in her future.
Last, but not least, Louis is regaining control of his restaurant. Kenny Rogers’ part of the business has gone bankrupt and now Louis can fully own the restaurant again. The only issue is that Matthew was fired. Chestnut loved Kenny Rogers and it was St. Patrick’s Day, which was his favorite day of the year. As could be imagined, he didn’t take it very well, but the obvious solution was for Louis to hire him, which made the whole issue feel like it had no stakes. It was obvious that Louis would offer him a job, so the problem felt more dragged out then it needed to be. The only interesting thing that came out of it was the joke at the end when Louis had to fire him twice.
