Now in it’s sixteenth year, the Tribeca Film Festival has been a staple in the film community, contributing to some of film’s finest filmmakers and ideas. In keeping with the festival’s mission to bring about new modes of storytelling, this year’s festival will include the inaugural Tribeca Games Festival, allowing audiences to experience what happens behind the scenes in the world’s most popular medium.
Taking place April 19 to April 30, the Tribeca Film Festival was founded in 2002 by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff in response to the September 11 attacks in New York City. Over the years, the festival has come to feature events prominent in New York as well as supporting many New York ventures, with the ultimate goal of bringing together up and coming storytellers into the spotlight.
In this way, the Tribeca Games Festival seems like a no-brainer. Taking place on the tail-end of the festival, on April 28 and 29, the Tribeca Games Festival is a result of the Tribeca Film Festival’s teaming up with Kill Screen, a popular video game arts company. The games will showcase some of the most highly anticipated games to come as well as take a close look at previously released games through their makers and game industry insiders.
One of the Games’ highlights will include a talk with Metal Gears creator Hideo Kojima, who will be celebrating Metal Gears’ thirtieth anniversary this July. Commonly referred to as the father of stealth action games, Kojima has not only won a number of awards including the Game Developers Choice Awards’ Lifetime Achievement Award, but he also plans on leading several events within the festival.
The Tribeca Games Festival will start with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale series, Episode 1, Telltale Games’ first crowd play of the game. In addition, Mura Masa will play at a concert while the festival’s highlights include “X Post Conversations,” a talk with game creators and other storytellers. And in addition to Kujima, Ken Levine, the writer and director of BioShock, and May Payne, Alan Wake, and Quantum Break creator Sam Lake also will be speaking.
