Patriots Day is the second film coming out this year from writer/director Peter Berg and actor/producer Mark Wahlberg after September’s Deepwater Horizon. The films contain some distinct similarities, both star Wahlberg as a heroic all-American and both movies dramatize recent, and traumatic, events in American history. Deepwater Horizon draws attention to the heroism and tragedy of the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and Patriots Day follows the events of the 2013 bombings at the Boston Marathon. From the two films’ similarities, it is likely that Patriot’s Day will preform as well critically as its predecessor, Deepwater Horizon.

In the aftermath of an unspeakable attack, Police Sergeant Tommy Saunders (Mark Wahlberg) joins courageous survivors, first responders and investigators in a race against the clock to hunt down the bombers before they strike again. Weaving together the stories of Special Agent Richard DesLauriers (Kevin Bacon), Police Commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman), Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese (J.K. Simmons) and nurse Carol Saunders (Michelle Monaghan) this visceral and unflinching chronicle captures the suspense of one of the most sophisticated manhunts in law enforcement history and celebrates the strength of the people of Boston.
