Books are not only great avenues for escaping to faraway lands and visiting magical worlds but they’re also a source of empowerment and strength. They remind us that our unique qualities are what make us special. The Sound of Us by Julie Hammerle celebrates just that. Julie’s book resonates the importance of body positivity and reminds us to embrace our own skin.
Much like reading, music too can affect your mood and is a great source when you need something to lift up your spirits. To help you get in that positive mindset and remind you to embrace your own skin, here are the top 3 songs that celebrate body positivity.
Colbie Caillat’s smooth melodic voice brings to life a beautiful message. “Try” reminds us that it’s okay to be ourselves, embrace your own skin and dismiss what others say about you. Society puts constant pressure on girls to buy makeup to enhance their features, buy the latest fashion trends and be someone who they’re not. But it shouldn’t be that way. Colbie reminds us to be ourselves, be unique. I’ve always admired Colbie’s strong spirit, how in tune she is with everything around her and how comfortable she is in her own skin.
Jason Mraz is by far still one of my favorite underrated artists, so he had to make it on the list. “Beautiful Mess” is a calming track that celebrates imperfections. The slow-paced song is not only soothing but reminds us that no one is perfect and that it’s important to embrace our whole self, flaws and all. We are all strong, confident individuals who all have scars and imperfections and that’s okay because well, that’s life. Embrace your whole self because that’s what is important.
Now going a completely different musical direction, Hailee Steinfeld’s song, “Love Myself”, is upbeat, catchy and fun to dance to (trust me.) This song is as upbeat as much as it’s uplifting. Hailee’s young voice rings in with confidence and empowerment. Her track reminds us to not care what others think and to only focus on how you view yourself. If you love yourself then that’s what matters the most. Her song can bring a smile to anyone’s face. It’s time to celebrate YOU.
Kiki Nichols might not survive music camp.
She’s put her TV-loving, nerdy self aside for one summer to prove she’s got what it takes: she can be cool enough to make friends, she can earn that music scholarship, and she can get into Krause University’s music program.
Except camp has rigid conduct rules—which means her thrilling late-night jam session with the hot drummer can’t happen again, even though they love all the same TV shows, and fifteen minutes making music with him meant more than every aria she’s ever sung.
But when someone starts snitching on rule breakers and getting them kicked out, music camp turns into survival of the fittest. If Kiki’s going to get that scholarship, her chance to make true friends—and her chance with the drummer guy—might cost her the future she wants more than anything.
